It intend to propose a path which is relevant to this Degree, from late XIXth C to XXth C on the interactions between the new scientific knowledge and specialized institutions for early childhood, the profound changes in the traditional ones (such as the foundling hospitals) and the establishment of new institutions (OMNI and the Italian Juvenile Court), modern professionals and volunteer. Characters, events and experiences will be explained by the specific case of Florence (the Innocenti Institut, the Umberto I, the School for Special teachers etc..), that is internationally known and yet in many ways still unexplored precisely in the XXth C.
